On Friday, May 8, Shawn Hake, a Pewaukee parent, organized a food drive throughout the city and village to support Pewaukee families in need during the summer.
Her team of organizers asked those who live in Pewaukee to leave labeled non-perishable food donations near their mailboxes. Volunteers went later on Friday morning to pick up the donations and deliver them to the Pewaukee School District office for storage and distribution.
“Pewaukee, you are amazing!” Hake said in a Facebook post. “I’m speechless. But, I’m not surprised. Our community is full of the most generous, kind, caring people. We take care of each other.”
The food drive was such a success that on top of giving donations to the school, they were able to support both Pewaukee and Waukesha Food Pantries, as well as assist students attending an elementary school in Waukesha.
In addition to collecting food items, they also requested gift cards that could be used to buy items such as fresh meat, produce, diapers, and other similar goods. Following the collection of all of the donations, they received $245 in gift card donations, and an additional $350 was donated to the Pewaukee Food Pantry.
“Thank you everyone!” Hake said. “There’s no way this ever could have happened without you all.”
