Review: Harry Styles’s Falling Music Video

Harry Styles Falling Music Video

The world is filled with all different kinds of music, and with great music comes great music videos. These can feature different cultures, artistic elements, unique fashions, along with self expression. This week I wanted to talk about the video Falling by Harry Styles. If you have not yet watched this music video I suggest you watch it before continuing.

Harry Styles is someone that takes self expression to a whole new level. In this video, Styles wears a beautiful lilac shirt from Gucci. Now there has been some controversy in Styles’s choice in wardrobe, and a debate of whether it’s okay if boys can wear girls clothes or vice versa has started. He has addressed this topic in many interviews.

In an interview with Vogue he said, “I think if you get something that you feel amazing in, it’s like a superhero outfit. Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with.”

When asked to specifically address if he felt he should wear boys or girls clothes he replied with, “If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay? Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though.’ I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.” In just one music video with almost 70 million views, he has shown the world that people can wear whatever they want no matter the gender they were born as.

About forty-five seconds into the video the room begins to fill with hot water pouring from inside the piano. Now a part of me recognizes that this was probably for safety reasons but the steam rising from the hot water creates this intense atmosphere as you realize that more and more water is rising in the room. A few moments after, the room becomes entirely filled with water and Harry is submerged, but continues to sing and play the piano. Eventually at the end of the video the gown is flowing in the water as well as the furniture and Harry himself.

Styles quickly sinks back into the depths of the water, which can easily be seen as him sinking back into his emotions he talks about throughout the song. Some speculate that this song is about his ex-girlfriend Camille Rowe and about not feeling able to move on and get through these emotions.

Finally, I want to talk about the foreshadowing that happens in this video. In the beginning Styles is sitting on the floor soaked, but in a drained room, where we find out later that the room was filled with water. This relates to the overall meaning of the song and shows the ‘rinse and repeat’ of his emotions of falling back in love with someone who you know you can no longer be with.

This is probably the greatest music video I have ever seen, and if you liked the video you should check out more of Harry’s music.
